Trends in Offsite Solutions, From Capital to Components
Tuesday, February 27, 8:00 – 8:30 AM

BSC Lounge, North Hall, Room 242
Speaker: Margaret Whelan, Founder & CEO, Whelan Advisory

Offsite construction, building systems, prefabricated components, industrialized construction and manufactured housing are a few of the terms for residential construction that uses factory-manufactured structural materials. Despite worldwide adoption and a century-long history, what we commonly refer to today as offsite construction can be confusing for industry veterans and newcomers.

Join us for a strategic overview of the offsite construction industry and its current place in the residential building market. Review economic forces that have prevented prior adoption of systems-built construction, what the industry is doing now to reverse those forces and offsite’s impact on the future of home building.

The Future of Housing with Certainty: It Looks a Lot Like Systems Building
Tuesday, February 27, 9:30 – 10:00 AM

BSC Lounge, North Hall, Room 242
Speaker: Sam Rashkin, Retooling the U.S. Housing Industry

You know what they say about the future, “adapt or be left behind.” Not so much for housing in the U.S. Until now. There are huge forces converging on the industry imposing so much pain while critical market-ready innovations are sitting on the sidelines waiting to mitigate that pain. This includes systems building. This session will look at why systems building can no longer remain at 3% market penetration and dive into critical strategies for crossing over to mainstream builders. Strategies that have been ignored for too long.

Hybrid Homes – Add Timber Frame Elements to Your Next Custom Build
Tuesday, February 27, 11:15 – 11:45 AM

BSC Lounge, North Hall, Room 242
Speaker: Mike Pollari, WHS Homes

Discuss the benefits of integrating pre-cut timber frame construction within conventionally built homes. Pre-cut heavy timber structures and elements can be easily installed on-site, add eye-catching design to a home, and can be part of a high-performance energy envelope. With options ranging from select structural Douglas fir to white oak and reclaimed timbers, a pre-cut timber frame package is an offsite construction component that can add value to new and renovated homes. Additionally, by including structural and non-structural elements, hybrid timber frame structures can be utilized in many areas, tailored for each project to maximize architectural impact and value.

The True Cost of Onsite vs. Offsite: A Model for Making the Right Choice for Your Business
Wednesday, February 28, 4:00 – 5:00 PM

LVCC – West 207
Speaker: Scott Sedam, True North Development

The potential benefits of offsite building have intrigued the industry since the introduction of the Sears Modern Home kit, yet the onsite vs. offsite debate is seemingly unsettled more than a century later and widespread adoption remains elusive. Why? Builders have lacked a comprehensive evaluation tool that measures the true cost of both methods, instead relying on a bid-price only comparison which leaves critical questions unanswered.

This session offers a new model. Based on input from builders, suppliers, trades, architects and engineers, it examines more than 20 unique factors critical to onsite vs. offsite construction methods and will allow you to make the best, most cost-effective decision for your business once and for all.
